Tomoo Machiba appointed to the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB) ーthe GRI Standard setting body
〜 Zeroboard joins the GRI Community 〜
Zeroboard, Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Michitaka Tokeiji), a developer and provider of Zeroboard, a cloud service for calculating and visualizing GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, announces that Tomoo Machiba, Director of Zeroboard Research Institute, a think tank affiliated with Zeroboard, has been appointed to the Global Sustainability Standards Board (hereinafter “GSSB”), an independent consultative body of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). His term on the Board will be for 3 years, beginning January 1, 2024. As one of the 15 members of the GSSB members, Mr. Machiba will support the further development and improvement of the GRI Standards* towards the realization of a universal corporate reporting and disclosure system in which financial reporting and sustainability reporting are conducted equally.
At the same time, we are pleased to announce that we have joined the GRI Community (membership scheme for supporters).
GRI is an independent, non-profit, global organization with a secretariat in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and offices in seven countries. Founded in 1997 in Boston, USA, to provide a mechanism for corporate accountability for responsible environmental stewardship, it has since expanded its scope to include social, economic, and governance issues.
The GSSB, to which Mr. Machiba has been appointed as a member, is a body established independently of GRI’s operations and responsible for developing GRI standards in accordance with prescribed procedures, similar to the role of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation. The GSSB supports and enhances the development of GRI Standards based on its broad technical expertise, diverse experience, and multi-stakeholder perspective.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the ISSB and the GSSB was signed in March 2022. Through mutual participation in advisory councils, it has been confirmed that the investor-focused IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, and the multi-stakeholder GRI Standards formulated by GSSB, will enhance compatibility as the dual pillars of global sustainability disclosure standards.
Upon the occasion of this appointment, Mr. Machiba stated, “Two decades on from serving in the GRI secretariat, I am very pleased to return and be able to contribute to the continued progress of the GRI Standards and realizing the visionary idea conceived by GRI founders Bob Massie and Allen White. I look forward to working with distinguished GSSB members to make the Standards even more robust and valuable for both reporters and users, while supporting our ongoing collaboration with key partners such as the ISSB and the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG).”
Through the provision of Zeroboard, we have been helping companies to visualize their GHG emissions. Currently, in the field of sustainability, where systems are being established at an accelerating pace, we are supporting our client companies in responding to ESG disclosures that go beyond GHG emissions. As an industry leader, we will continue to actively participate in global discussions and rulemaking, and apply the knowledge and expertise we gain from these activities to promote and support sustainability management of Japanese companies.
